Project Description
MnDOT is replacing the fracture-critical Eisenhower Memorial Bridge, a steel truss through-deck bridge, in Red Wing, MN. This bridge is the only regional Mississippi River crossing for approximately 30 miles upstream and downstream for communities on either side of the river. Cemstone chose FORTA-FERRO macro synthetic fibers for this bridge deck application totaling 3,000 cu yd with a fiber dosage of 5.0 lb/cu yd. Fibers, when used with stainless steel rebar, greatly minimizes the cracking and corrosion potential of the bridge. As a result, the lifespan of the bridge extends as well as provides a smooth road surface. In addition, FORTA-FERRO fibers are easy to use with uniform mixing and no balling or clumping compared to other fiber products. The I-35W bridge collapse prompted the Minnesota Legislature to come up with bonding money to replace fracture-critical bridges in the state. That funding went towards replacing this bridge. The new 1,642 ft long Eisenhower Memorial Bridge will provide two lanes for vehicular traffic and a 12 ft wide space for pedestrian and bike traffic.
Key Points:
- Reduced Shrinkage Cracking
- Increased Durability
- Superior Finish
