Atlanta Botanical Gardens Walkway

Atlanta, GA - December 2009

Project Description

Halvorson and Partners Engineers of Atlanta specified FORTA-FERRO® in addition to conventional reinforcing steel for a unique suspended walkway project within the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.  Over 500 feet in length, the elevated sidewalk was 10 – 12 feet wide and placed at 5 inches thick on the special metal deck and suspension system. The engineer’s goal was to minimize shrinkage-related cracking, while eliminating the need for construction or control joints over the length of the structure. Special pre-project trials were carried out well in advance of proposed placement date. After the trials came back with successful results, the concrete was placed and finished with a fiber-free light-broom surface. A thin weather-resistant coating was applied over the finished product, and to date, there are no visible cracks over the entire length of the walkway.

Key Points:

  • Reduce cracking
  • Extreme Durability
  • Eliminated Control Joints
