Project Description:
The State of Georgia Department of Transportation began an evaluation of the FORTA-FERRO® structural synthetic fiber in early 2001. This study resulted in an "Accepted" classification in late August 2001 by the New Products Evaluation Committee (FORTA-FERRO® NPE#0103-4) of the Office of Materials and Research in Forest Park, Georgia. This acceptance status allowed the FORTA-FERRO® to be used in late 2001 on a state bridge deck topping project in Ringold, Georgia. The bridge, originally built in the 1950's, had been resurfaced in 1997, but had already deteriorated to the point of necessary repair. The Georgia D.O.T. looked to FORTA-FERRO® as an easy-to-use and cost-effective method to add a high level of crack control and long-term durability. After scarifying 3-1/2" of deteriorated concrete, a cement slurry was brushed on as a bonding agent. FORTA-FERRO® was added and mixed at a dosage of 4 lbs./cubic yard, and then placed using a vibrating power screed. The FORTA-FERRO® fiber offered no difficulties to the bull-float and broom finish.
