Project Description:
In previous pool projects of similar design, considerable cracking was occurring around the pool drains as well as along the sidewalls. Normal reinforcement consisted of #4 bars on 6" centers. Design/build contractor Swim Things Inc. chose to add 5 lbs./cubic yard of the FORTA-FERRO® macrosynthetic fiber to control cracking, while increasing the bar spacing to 36" O.C. The fiber was added and mixed on-site by the ready-mix producer and the fiber-reinforced concrete was shotcreted onto the structure as normal with no changes to conventional procedure. This 80 cubic yard hotel pool was finished in normal fashion, using 3 foot-long wooden hand floats for initial strike-off. Even with a relatively robust dosage of 5 lbs./cubic yard, the fibers were not readily noticeable on the initial screeded surfaces, and did not negatively affect the final pool finish. Due to the successful elimination of previous cracking on this project, Swim Things has continued the 3-dimensional macrosynthetic fiber practice in over 800 cubic yards of shotcrete pool construction to date.
