Project Description:
The residence and winery at Arroyo Grande Ranch represent a multi-application project for the FORTA-FERRO® structural synthetic fiber reinforcement. Due to the remote location in the coastal California mountains of this 4,000 acre ranch, all site-used concrete is batched in a 9 cubic yard capacity volumetric mixer that can produce up to 70 cubic yards per hour. The FORTA-FERRO® fiber is typically added manually at the mixing auger at a dosage rate of 3-1/2 to 5 pounds per cubic yard. Beginning in early 2004, the FORTA-FERRO® fiber has been used in over 900 cubic yards of concrete applications, including 1/2 mile of stamped and colored hillside driveways, a smooth-finish tennis court slab, precast/prestressed concrete roof trusses, and over 300 cubic yards of hard-trowelled floor slab for an equipment storage facility. Owner project manager, Brian Cowen, uses the FORTA-FERRO® 2-1/4" long structural synthetic fiber in almost all concrete placements on the ranch as an effective alternative to conventional reinforcing steel, and to offer uniform 3-dimensional crack control. The project has also garnered national attention in a January 2005 article “Rounding Up Quality" in The CONCRETE PRODUCER magazine.
