Project Description:
FORTA® was specified and utilized over a three-year period at St. Louis International Airport, beginning in August of 1983. Specifying engineer Gene Cullman chose the FORTA® three-dimensional fibrous reinforcement as the temperature/shrinkage reinforcement, to add impact strength, long-term durability, and toughness. Cullman also cited the fibers' ability to reduce permeability by reducing plastic and hardened concrete shrinkage cracking as a primary reason for choosing FORTA®. FORTA®'s chemically inert nature also allowed the fiber to be impervious to possible airline hydraulic oils and fluids. Initial trials in 1983 involved the use of FORTA® ULTRA-NET® fiber 2-1/2" long, in approximately 500 cubic yards of full-depth repair slabs on the terminal tarmac. Based on the uniform distribution, ease of handling and placing, and initial performance testing, FORTA® was used on two subsequent project phases in 1985. Phase I involved 7,150 cubic yards of apronway ramp paving, and Phase II included an additional 1,200 cubic yards of actual taxi-way paving. The FORTA®-reinforced concrete was site batched, and received a burlap-drag surface finish.
